Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to contribute on the development of nursing interventions and elevation of professional education in aged care by classifying and explaining the structural types of nurses¡¯ attitude toward the elderly people.

Method: The research method was Q-methodology. 40-statement questionnaire was given to 32 nurses selected as P-sample and the results were put into 9 score scale and compulsorily distributed. Principal Component Analysis was applied to the collected data using the QUANL PC program.

Result: The first type was ¡®regarding elderly with hostility,¡¯ which was the negative attitude toward elderly, that observe elderly as disliking changes, clinging to their own things and being stubborn. The second type was ¡®hugging elderly intimately,¡¯ that nurses view elderly as a people who concern more about their family than themselves, and feel intimate from elderly people¡¯s faces, so they should respect and have high regard for elderly people. The third type was ¡®holding back from the burden,¡¯ that nurses don¡¯t want to be closely involved with elderly with neutral attitude toward them, neither positive nor negative.

Conclusion: Therefore, this study suggested the necessity of the development of nursing program which will inspire the positive attitude toward elderly people by different types of nurses¡¯ attitude.
